摘要The Cretaceous oceanic (or marine) red beds (CORBs) and their implications for "oceanic oxic events" have attracted enormous attention of geologists worldwide. In southern Tibet, the CORBs are widely distributed in Upper Cretaceous strata of the northern Tethyan Himalaya (NTH). One of the well-exposed, CORB-bearing, mixed carbonate-shale sequences in the NTH is outcropped in the Bangguolai section of Rilang Township, Gyangze County, southern Tibet of China. Well-preserved CORBs of the Chuangde Formation in the Bangguolai section consist of reddish shale, limestone and marlstone with interbeds of siltstone, which overlie the Jiabula/ Gyabula Formation (mainly shale) and underlie the Zongzhuo Formation ("melange"). The precise age, depositional environments, and regional/global correlation of the CORBs of the Chuangde Formation and their implications for synchronous vs. diachronous oceanic oxic events remain uncertain. This paper reports a comprehensive analysis of foraminiferal biostratigraphy, microfacies, and carbon isotopes for the CORB-bearing Chuangde Formation and the upper Jiabula Formation of the Bangguolai section. Detailed foraminiferal biostratigraphy of the Chuangde Formation reveals four planktic foraminiferal biozones including Globotruncanita elevata, Contusotruncana plummerae, Radotruncana calcarata and Globotruncanella havanensis, confirming that the Chuangde Formation (and CORBs) is of Campanian age, which is broadly correlatable with the typical Upper Cretaceous CORBs of pelagic-hemipelagic settings in other areas of the NTH in southern Tibet. Field and petrographic analyses identify eight microfacies and four facies associations for the Upper Cretaceous strata in Gyangze and its adjacent areas. In particular, the microfacies features and microfossil assemblages of CORBs in Gyangze and Kangmar areas indicate that the planktic foraminiferal packstone/grainstone CORBs were deposited from outer shelf to upper slope depositional environments, whereas the radiolarian chert CORBs may have deposited from deep-water, basinal environments below CCD (carbonate compensation depth). The positive and negative delta 13C excursions, anchored by key microfossil zonal boundaries, indicate that the Upper Cretaceous CORBs are synchronous in the eastern Tethys and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
